TikTok and Billboard Launch TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart

There's now another Billboard chart allowing artists to claim a No. 1 spot, as Billboard has teamed with TikTok to launch the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart. This chart will rank the most popular songs on the social media platform in the United States, even if most users have only heard a 30-second snippet over and over.

How it works: Chart rankings will be determined by multiple factors including the number of user-created videos, video views and user engagement by U.S. TikTok users. The chart, which is the first to monitor the popularity of music on TikTok, will be updated and released every Thursday and is available to all TikTok users in the U.S. and on Billboard.com.

According to Billboard, the inaugural chart's No. 1 spot belongs to Sexyy Red's "SkeeYee," and the rapper also has three other placements on this week's ranking. Doja Cat is at No. 2 with "Paint the Town Red" and Taylor Swift is in third place with "August." In true TikTok fashion, the most popular songs on the app are a mix of just-released material and throwbacks, as evidenced by the fact that Dazz Band’s 1982 hit "Let It Whip" is in the Top 10 this week.

What they're saying: "TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, and each week our passionate community of music fans drives songs onto the Billboard charts," said Ole Obermann, global head of music business development at TikTok. "It therefore made perfect sense to partner with Billboard to create the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart. The chart gives a clear picture of the music that is being listened to on TikTok, and consequently starting to trend on DSPs and other services."
