Superplastic Launches Music Division, Debuts Animated Hip-Hop Duo

Continuing the move toward a digital world, entertainment brand and character design studio Superplastic expanded into music at Rolling Loud festival in Miami, unveiling the 3D animated hip-hop duo Ghost Kidz in a surprise performance.

What? Ahead of Lil Uzi Vert's set at Rolling Loud, Ghost Kidz rappers Lil' ILL and Filth-E broke into the festival's sound booth and took control of the stage, delivering an impromptu freestyle rap and premiering their debut music video "Goin' Off" featuring Vince Staples. Ghost Kidz are the first artists to be signed by Superplastic Records and are distributed by Virgin Music.

The artists behind the personas of Lil' ILL and Filth-E are prominent figures in hip-hop who have chosen to remain anonymous, marking a new collaboration for Superplastic. The company has previously worked with artists including Vince Staples, J. Balvin and the virtual band Gorillaz.

Money moves: Earlier this year, Superplastic raised $20 million in an investment round led by Amazon. Amazon Studios is developing a show around Superplastic's virtual celebrities Janky and Guggimon (Ghost Kidz's manager) and Superplastic has a first-look deal with Amazon Studios.

What they're saying: "We've been developing the Ghost Kidz for a long time," Galen McKamy, Chief Creative Officer of Superplastic, shared. "There is so much thought and expertise poured into the group from creatives and partners, we love that when choosing a label partner, we needed real people that believe in the music and the story. We spoke with many labels, and Virgin felt like the perfect fit because they were excited and had ideas from the jump."
