Senate Attempts to Take Action Against Ticketmaster
Making good on a promise to rein in Live Nation/Ticketmaster, the US Senate is taking action against the all-powerful company with two newly introduced bills.
Catch me up: After the disastrous rollout of presale tickets for Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour, fans and critics have called for something to be done about Ticketmaster and Live Nation's near monopoly of the concert ticket market. In January, a hearing gathered testimony from a number of influential stakeholders, and now the Senate is moving forward with legislation to address wild fees and crazy prices.
What'd they do? Senators Amy Klobuchar and Richard Blumenthal introduced the Unlock Ticketing Markets Act on April 26, which does not name Live Nation/Ticketmaster directly but calls for an end to the multi-year exclusivity contracts Ticketmaster forces on venues.
Meanwhile, The Transparency in Charges for Key Events Ticketing, or TICKET, Act, was introduced April 25 by Senators Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, calling for advertised prices to include all fees up front – a practice known as all-in pricing. Live Nation is okay with all-in pricing, but says they are not a monopoly and wants the Senate to instead tackle rampant reselling.
What they're saying: “Without competition to incentivize better services and fair prices, we all suffer the consequences,” says Senator Klobuchar.
But according to a Live Nation rep speaking with Rolling Stone, the ticket market is “more competitive than ever.” “Ticketmaster wins business because it offers the best product available for venues, and the length of contracts is generally decided by venues and the guaranteed payments they want to help support their expenses,” the rep said.
