2024 Grammy Nominations: Country Music Barely Cracks the Big Four
The 2024 Grammy nominations were announced on Friday, SZA is leading artists this year with a total of nine nods. She was followed by Phoebe Bridgers, Victoria Monét and music engineer Serban Ghenea with seven nominations each. Jon Batiste, boygenius, Brandy Clark, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff, each scored six.
Snubbed? Country music had a noteworthy year in the mainstream, but despite their dominance on the Billboard Hot 100, Morgan Wallen's "Last Night" and Luke Combs' cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" scored just one nomination apiece - "Last Night" for Best Country Song and "Fast Car" for Best Country Solo Performance. Country music also failed to make any impression on the all-genre categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, though Jelly Roll and The War And Treaty were both nominated for Best New Artist.
Play something country: Zach Bryan was one of the leaders in the country categories, scoring nods for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for his Kacey Musgraves collaboration "I Remember Everything" and a Best Country Album nod for his self-titled project. In the latter category, he's joined by Kelsea Ballerini's Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, Brothers Osborne's self-titled album, Tyler Childers' Rustin' In The Rain and Lainey Wilson's Bell Bottom Country. Chris Stapleton ties Bryan with three nods while Wilson, Jelly Roll, Musgraves and Brothers Osborne have two each.
Multi-genre moves: Childers has a total of five nods also including Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song, Best Americana Performance and Best Music Video. Brandy Clark earned a total of six nominations in the Country and Americana categories plus Best Musical Theater Album for her work on Shucked alongside Shane McAnally. McAnally was also nominated for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, as was Jessie Jo Dillon. Brandi Carlile crossed genres with two nods including Best Americana Performance with Clark for "Dear Insecurity" as well as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with Miley Cyrus, "Thousand Miles."
The 2024 Grammy Awards will take place Sunday, February 4 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and will air live on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.
